Cadence — The Sound of Music

Today was a singular event. I rested my body for the day to prepare for the music hall Ehrbar Salon. It was a one hour concert where the masters have played before in years past.

I took two subway trains to get here. I stopped off at a Persian restaurant called Apadana. I had lamb skewers with seasoned rice and a tomato salad. It was adequate for its sole purpose to satisfy one hunger for food but the real feast was to come for the sound of music.

The reception was upstairs and the room was quite small but shaped properly to hopefully propagate the sound waves at just the right distribution.

I sit toward the back and nestle my self next to a grand piano clothed in leather. It won’t be used by it is satisfying being close to an instrument of stringed harmony.

The music starts at 6:30 sharp.The instruments are sharp.The violin commandos the room with backup from the double bass and cello. The piano adds laddering drama. The warm up is snippets of famous tunes from centuries past.

Vivaldi : Four seasons – Couldn’t have started the concert with a more perfect composition. It’s summer and it’s boiling but the music cools the room with joy.

Mozart : Requiem in D minor, K. 626 – The host implies that Mozart may have never listened to his own music since it was missing the 5th movement. It was moving nonetheless. .

Strauss : The Blue Danube Waltz – A classic that brings uplifting memories from travels past.

Swing : Bei Mir Bist Du Schön – The influence of America on Viennese music in the 1800s was a surprising addition.

Strauss : Emperor Waltz – I am transported to the gardens in Bratislava. The smell of fresh cut grass is the violin, the piano the blooming roses, the cello the cool breeze, and the double bass the Koi in the water.

There were several opera sections sung by a very talented singer however there was no program printed so I did not capture all the names. The program lasted an hour and it went by fast. Another concert coming up tomorrow.
