There are 26 prison cells on the first floor of the Site of Witness and Memory in Shkoder. The night before, Yona served me 26 dishes at her home. I don’t believe in coincidences like that — not when they arrive this neatly, this pointedly. Day 2 in Shkoder was supposed to be a rest day. Instead it became a meditation on trauma, numerology, terrible Burger King fries, and the single best bench in Albania.

🙏 Sanctuary — The Site of Witness and Memory

The Site of Witness and Memory is exactly what it sounds like: a place to remember the communist horror that occurred here in the 20th century. Many were executed. Thousands were imprisoned. 987 died in prison. We visit places like this to remember what happens when humanity goes haywire — when ideology becomes a machine and people become its fuel.

There are 26 prison cells on the first floor. I stopped counting and just stood there.

26 cells. 26 dishes. Is it a coincidence or a parallel? Is there still psychic trauma permeating through everything here?

I looked into it. Numerologists view the number 26 as a powerful symbol of diplomacy, compassion, and humanitarianism — combining the energies of 2 (cooperation, balance) and 6 (nurturing, responsibility toward others). It represents the best of what humans can be toward one another.

Albania gained its independence from communism in 1991. Here’s where it gets strange: in mathematics, the number 26 in base 10 is represented as 1991 in base 26. I don’t know what to do with that information except sit with it. Some patterns aren’t meant to be solved — just observed, with the kind of attention that borders on reverence.

👅 Palate — Pancakes at Nam (and the Cigarette Sauppler™)

I stopped at Nam Bistro for coffee. The patio was full but there was plenty of seating inside. Nam is the only restaurant I’ve found in Shkoder that doesn’t have ashtrays on every single table — just a few. The crowd skews foreign, so smoking is kept to a minimum. I thought I’d be safe.

Then the cigarette Sauppler™ effect kicked in. The breeze shifted and pulled smoke directly into my face. I looked around and found the culprit: a late-middle-aged man with deep yellow teeth — the kind of staining that tips you off to a pack-a-day habit sustained over decades. There’s no escaping it in Shkoder. You can only negotiate with the wind.

By the way, have we mentioned 7 Senses is a smoke-free blog?

Pancakes at Nam

I ordered the pancakes out of a tinge of hunger and boredom. The plate arrived and I was genuinely surprised: fried pancakes, crisp at the edges, served with the most delightful honey I have ever tasted. Not the cloying, one-note sweetness of supermarket honey — this was floral, complex, with a brightness that cut through the fry oil. An amazing, surprising treat. Sometimes the best meals are the ones you didn’t plan to have.

🧭 Wander — The Rest Day That Wasn’t

I headed back to the apartment. It’s laundry day. I need to plan activities for Tirana and catch up on news. Besides, it’s too hot outside to do anything productive and I’m already sunburned from close to a month of continuous travel.

After the Montenegro bus nightmare, I’ve made a decision: no more day excursions from Albania. The infrastructure is simply not ready — single-lane highways, no public transport, traffic that turns a 2.5-hour trip into six. I need to revisit and replan activities accordingly. Tirana will be a different rhythm.

👅 Palate — The Hunger Hour (Burger King)

It’s the hunger hour — that time around 4 pm when you get particularly hungry, especially if you’ve skipped lunch, and you will settle for anything. In this case, anything was a Burger King. Open. Cheap. Seemingly consistent around the planet in food taste.

I ordered the Whopper meal. The meat flavor is the same as back home. The veggies, surprisingly, taste a bit fresher here. But the fries were atrocious — the potato quality had an industrial aftertaste, the oil bland. Not even salt could rescue them. The fountain drink was off too — too much flavoring, not enough carbonation. Flat in all dimensions of taste and flavor.

I genuinely avoid fast food, but there are times the only place open is a fast food joint and your stomach holds you hostage. “It’s the burger or it’s lights out!” It’s a love/hate relationship topped with a dash of Stockholm syndrome.

✋ Unwind — The Magic Bench

After my late lunch, I stopped for my obligatory ice cream at a place called Gelateria in old town. “Biscuit” flavor — what Americans call cookies and cream. About 50 yards down from the shop, I found it: the magic bench.

Let me explain the magic.

At sunset, this bench is nicely shaded. But it gets better. The old town acts as a wind tunnel — the stone alley channels the breeze, and as the air exits the narrow corridor, it accelerates. A flag nearby extends almost horizontally, curved and folded but not completely taut. I asked an AI to estimate the wind speed from a photo of the flag’s shape. Its analysis:

  • Flag extended almost horizontally with steady flutter → Beaufort force 3–4
  • ~12 mph / 20 km/h sustained, with gusts pushing higher
  • Enough to cool you down significantly in 35°C heat

Now put it all together: this isolated bench is shaded, has strong wind against it, and there’s nothing else around it. If you are the fortunate soul to sit here on your own, you get to avoid most cigarette smoke. And that is where the magic is — one of the few locations in Shkoder mostly free of cigarette smoke.

I sat here for almost an hour, enjoying my biscuit ice cream as it melted. The air was flowing, mostly clean. For the first time all day — maybe all trip — I could meditate for a few moments. No traffic noise. No smoke. Just the wind, the shade, and the distant murmur of a city that never quite stops.

I don’t believe in coincidences. 26 cells, 26 dishes. 26 in base 10 is 1991 in base 26, the year Albania broke free. Some patterns aren’t meant to be solved — just observed, with the kind of attention that borders on reverence.

Some days you feast on 26 dishes. Other days you eat a Whopper, find a bench that the wind gods blessed, and remember that sometimes the best travel experiences aren’t the ones you plan — they’re the ones that find you when you’re tired, sunburned, and just hungry enough to stop caring about authenticity.
